What is Broadband?
Broadband is a term for high speed internet access technology. Sometimes this is also referred to as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). The main features of Broadband are:
-
It uses an existing telephone line
-
It offers a permanent connection to the internet (no need to dial up)
-
It operates at speeds 10 times greater than a dial-up modem connection
Broadband works by connecting your computer to one at the telephone exchange over your existing telephone line, which it shares with normal voice calls. You can make telephone calls while using Broadband at the same time.
Broadband is always on. This means that you do not have to dial-up in order to use it. No more screeching noises from your modem. No more engaged lines and dropped calls. Broadband is connected as soon as you switch on your computer.
Broadband operates at much higher speeds than dial-up connections. Theoretically, a modem connection can give speeds of 56 kbps (kilo bits per second), but in reality a typical dial-up connection will be around 36 to 40 kbps due to line losses, interference etc. On the other hand, Broadband speeds are typically 512 kbps and the ADSL technology will allow speeds of 2 Mbps in the future - that's more than 50 times faster than a modem connection.
What can I get from Broadband?
Faster Internet surfing than normal dial-up service
Watch smooth and high quality video streaming
Play exciting online games
Faster content and file downloading
Cost-saving unlimited connection at a flat rate
Free or low cost phone calls using VoIP
What is LAN (Local Area Network)? A LAN, or Local Area Network, is a group of computers, printers or other hardware (called nodes) that are all connected in a reasonably small geographic location like an office or a home. A LAN makes it possible for the connected users to share files and applications that usually reside on a server or some type of shared computer.
LANs were invented to let people and computers share information. A server can have an application or database that is accessed by all the other computers on the LAN. This allows users to share information quickly and easily.
